Tresscode
An upcoming hair and body perfume brand with scents inspired by English nostalgia.
The challenge
Tresscode’s founder approach Chromakane with a brand identity, packaging and artworking challenge for their key launch product: Code Vanilla – a modern gourmand scent with a coastal twist. The brand is inspired by English nostalgia, channelled in an elevated way.
The solution
I worked closely and collaboratively with Tresscode’s founder to create a visual identity, brief style guide system, and pack design for Code Vanilla – giving Tresscode all the visual brand and design elements it needs for a successful brand launch with one core product.
Scope
Artworking, Art direction, Brand design, Creative direction, Editorial design, Packaging design, Print production
Logo exploration.
I began the project by tackling the logo design, an important cornerstone of the brand’s visual identity.
I developed three concept routes, based on different tones of voice, landing on the ‘bold, youthful, modern’ feel as the preferred design.
Packaging design.
I explored several packaging design variations (below) for Code Vanilla, before landing on this clean, retrained and minimalist design with bold typographic treatment – taking the idea from concept to technical dieline delivery.
An important part of this process – especially for a new brand without an existing visual world – was to create the concepts as an art direction exercise so that the founder could better imagine how the world could come to life.
Brief brand world & style guide design.
Design takeaways
Creating an identity from zero: importance of the founder’s story. How do you create a brand that feels established, recognisable and memorable before it has any brand recognition? Leaning into the founder’s story to create strong positioning is definitely something I was keen to explore for Tresscode’s design identity.
Translating an invisible product into a visual experience. Perfume is an interesting product to design for because its main selling point is something you cannot physically see. It then becomes an exercise in using design to interpret scents, notes, while still remaining true to the brand’s cohesive visual experience.
